Working overtime: Night school gives students a second chance

After a frustrating semester in Astronomy, senior Alexandria Kile realized that she would not be able to graduate with her senior class of 2010. The news was frustrating, frightening and disappointing, but that all changed when she was told that she would be a part of night school and given an opportunity to turn things around.

The goal of night school is to create second chances for every student in that situation. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 17, night school helped numerous students earn credits for failed classes. Teachers came to mentor students and guide them through the process of night school.

Night school was provided only for those students that had high F’s or high D’s. Students who had completely flunked a class were not part of the program. Students were selected specifically by teachers.

“Students had to have a certain percentage or a teacher recommend[ation] to night school,” English teacher Nathan Dixie said.

Last summer a similar program was put in place with very successful results, but this was the first time the program has been done during winter.

Senior Miquel La’France Brown explains some of the benefits and downsides of night school.

“Pros are you make up work and get a better understanding of [the] subject that you failed.” Brown said. “I’m understanding physics better.”

Dixie agrees that the night school has helped students immensely. Not only have many students been able to pass their classes, but some have even gotten out of night school early.

“A number [of] students got their grade[s] up,” Dixie said. “They are not

With so many students becoming a part of the program, staff created a systemic way to sort out each student. Students were divided by the class they were unable to pass and put with teachers who taught that subject.

“If you failed a science class then your are with a science teacher,” senior

Night school has been seen as both a blessing and a curse. While students are able to gain further knowledge, time away from family and friends can be taken unwillingly.

“The cons are it’s school after school,” Brown said. “So I miss out on family time.”

Regardless of the free time missed, teachers still point out the reasoning behind night school, which they say will ultimately work in favor for night school students.

“Night school is a opportunity for some students to complete a class that they failed.” English teacher Mike Carriger said.
