Streamline strong, junior Tyler Jones explodes off the block to start off his race. This year Sunflower League was held at Shawnee Mission’s new aquatic Center. “Competing at League was probably one of the most exciting meets for me.” Jones said, “We were in such a nice pool and the energy was crazy high.”

On the edge, junior Andrew Augustine prepares to dive in as soon as his teammate touches the wall. “It was great to be on a relay because you got to depend on other people and not just yourself.” Augustine said.

Counting on, junior Tyler Jones cheers on his teammate Max Cowardin (freshman) as he counts for his 500 freestyle. After competing in prelims, Cowardin was in 8th place. In the finals, Cowardin moved up two spots and finished in 6th place.

Back in the swim of things, freshman Max Whittaker dives into the pool during the Sunflower League meet on Feb. 7. The start is one of the most crucial moments during a race, messing up the start can disrupt one’s performance. “It gets in my head and throws me off,” says Whittaker, “but it really forces me to give more effort to catch up and push myself harder.”
