Last night the Lawrence High Lions defeated the Olathe Northwest Ravens 42-34.
It was the first action in over a month for the Lions, who had a tournament canceled last week due to the weather.
The Lions started off giving the ravens 6 points as the Lions do not have a 103 lb. wrestler. The lead was short-lived as the Lions Hunter Haralson quickly tied the match with a fall over the Ravens.
The Lions then fell behind as Caleb Torneden and Marshall Bonham were pinned by their Raven opponents. The Ravens with an 18-6 lead were on a roll, freshman Andrew Denning, in his first competition for the Lions scored an 9-6 decision over Aman Singh of Olathe NW.
The Lions were starting to claw their way back 18-9. Olathe NW wrestler Dylan Murrison scored an upset win by fall over the Lions Chris Lane.
The score now 24-9 Olathe NW, the Lions needed someone to step up to stop Olathe NW. Levi Flohrschutz answered the call by pinning his opponent making the score 24-15.
The 145lbs match pitted the Lions Braxton Vardys against Olathe NW Conner Middleton (ranked No. 3 in 6A state) a returning state placer. Braxton did what he needed to do to save points for the Lions, losing by a major decision. The major decision gave the Ravens 4 points now making the score 28-15.
The Lions now with momentum roared with a major decision by Cameron Magdaleno, a fall by Spencer Wilson, a fall by Reece Wright-Conklin, a fall by Ben Seybert and a forfeit victory by Brad Wilson.
The Lions raced by the Ravens making the score 42-28. The Ravens added a late 6 points as the Loins did not have a 285lbs. wrestler.
The final score 42-34 LIONS WIN!!!!
Other wrestling notes:
The junior varsity scored a victory over the Ravens winning 34-30. Victories by Adam Ramos, Macon Ezell, Ryan Schulteis, Jordan Cuttell, Randall Wingert and Dom Reiske propelled the Lions to a Win.
