David Hammack struck a bet with a friend that will affect his wardrobe for the rest of the semester.
The senior bet his friend he could wear a Royals shirt every day first semester. Fueling the bet is a $20 wager, although Hammack doesn’t mind standing out. Last year he was known as Snuggie Kid for donning the blankets with sleaves on a daily basis.
For most students, wearing a Royals shirt every day would be a challenge. Although Hammack just moved to Kansas last year, he’s enthusiastically collected more than 70 shirts — the result of a job working at Kauffman Stadium.
“My first day on the job, I cooked 12,000 hot dogs,” Hammack said.
The stadium job can be tough work. Imagine moving 200,000 pounds of items the equivalent of at least 10 miles during a game.
Although he’s gone from baseball to working at the Chief’s games, Hammack is sticking with his Royal’s shirts. He’s even had some encounters with members of the team.
“I delivered breakfast to the Royals one time,” he said. “They’re pretty normal people.”
Working at the games, he’s also collected 12 Royals hats, 30 bobbleheads and a couple baseball bats. Of his collection, he said his favorite shirt is a blue Frank Butler jersey.
After graduating at semester, Hammack plans to put away the Royals shirts in favor of a lab coat.
He wants to go to KU and become a pharmacist.
“I love chemistry,” he said.
