At 11:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 13 senior boys climbed through the outside window of the concessions booth to pull an unexpected senior prank.
The prank consisted of taking desks out of class rooms, moving them into hallways and the gym, tying all but a few doors shut with rope and popping out ceiling tiles to write out ‘2010’ across the gym floor.
Senior pranks happen every year and are usually not a problem, however this prank was preceded by a broken window and the theft of a projector in Room 103.
Administrators have confirmed that the senior prank and the theft of the projector in Room 103 were two unrelated events. They also believe that there is a connection between the person who stole the projector and the person who broke into the softball storage shed. Both of these crimes are currently under investigation by the Lawrence Police Department.
The desk prank came as a shock to all the administration because of its timing and the lack of clearance the boys received.
“Typically the senior prank is done in May, so it came as a big surprise to me,” Assistant Principal Jan Leonard said. “It was so much of a surprise that a couple people who came up with the original idea didn’t even get a chance to participate.”
According to one of the boys involved, moving the prank up allowed it not to conflict with Mud Volleyball or Mother’s Day.
The prank inspired generally positive reactions among teachers who had desks pulled out of their classrooms.
“It’s definitely a pain, but I actually thought it was pretty hilarious,” English teacher Shannon Draper-Gard said.
English teacher Paula Bastemeyer made the best of the situation by christening “Monday Bring-your-chair-to-class Day”.
“It’s Bring-your-chair-to-class Day,” Bastemeyer said. “I’m not bringing all those chairs in myself.”
Leonard is open to the idea of another senior prank that involves more seniors, as long as it is approved by the administration beforehand.
“We are not an anti-prank administration,” Leonard said. “As long as no one gets hurt and there’s no property damage, I’m OK with it.”
Seniors looking to pull additional pranks in the coming weeks need to make sure they get full permission from the administration before the prank is pulled.
