LHS students visit St Louis for the NSPA conference

After a long week, LHS journalism staff returned to Lawrence ready for sleep.

Lawrence High School journalism students brought home national honors from the National High School Journalism Convention in StLouis last month.

These are individual honors from the National Scholastic Press Association for work completed during the 2022 school year:

First-place Story of the Year-Sports Story went to 2022 graduate Cuyler Dunn for reporting on the gymnastics sit-in. 

Second place Design of the Year-Newsmagazine Cover recognition went to senior Asher Wolfe.

Fourth-place Design of the Year-Newsmagazine/Spread recognition went to the team of Brandon Parnell and Anna Anderson.

Fifth-place Broadcast Journalist of the Year honors went to senior Hayden Houts for his portfolio.

Fifth-place Writer of the Year honors went to 2022 graduate Cuyler Dunn for his portfolio.

Honorable mention Story of the Year-News Story recognition went to Cuyler Dunn and Arien Roman-Rojas for their reporting on classified staff pay.

These are staff honors from the National Scholastic Press Association for work in current publications and 2022 school year publications:

Third place, news website for high schools with enrollment of less than 1,800. Editors in Chief are Hayden Houts, Finn Lotton-Barker and Jack Ritter.

Eighth place, yearbooks 224-278 pages, 2022 Red & Black yearbook. Editors in chief were Kenna McNally and Kate O’Keefe.

Sixth place, literary arts magazine, 2022 Graffiti yearbook insert. Designed by Emily Hurd, Emily O’Hare and Declan Patrick.

These are honors received by students competing in St. Louis in the National Student Media Contests through the Journalism Education Association. The top honor is superior (in which students receive medals). The second-highest ranking is excellent:
