Photography teacher Angelia Perkins and math teacher Greg Farley offered their tips for finals success.
What advice would you give a student that is behind in your class to succeed during finals week?
Angelia Perkins: “I gave the student’s a review sheet, and at this point it’s the students responsibility to succeed.”
Greg Farley: “Pick some problems from each section that was studied and review questions that come up.”
What is one technique would you recommend your students to succeed on your final test?
AP: “Reviewing the information on the review sheet and quiz themselves with what they know.”
GF: “I would tell my students that they shouldn’t spend too much time on one particular problem to make sure to complete everything you can.”
What eating habits should a student obtain to succeed during finals week?
AP: “Well, I feel that students and teachers at the end of the year are so busy they just eat whatever is easy. I feel you don’t need to change but just realize downing tons of coffee isn’t healthy and should eat something nutritious.”
GF: “I would recommend that you should cut out the caffeine at least an hour before you go to bed.”
How much sleep should a student have to succeed during finals week?
AP: “I feel you should get a good solid eight hours of sleep before taking your final. It just puts your brain in such a better state of mind.”
GF: “I would say you still need to get at least five to six hours.”
When should a student start studying for their final tests?
AP: “Obviously, if you could study as you go along that would be best. But most students should at least try to do that a week in advance so that you have time to ask the teacher any questions.”
GF: “I would say about a week before the test date.”
Where should a student go to study and succeed during finals week?
AP: “Some place where you are most comfortable and not distracted. That could be in your room or in that teacher’s classroom.”
GF: “They should have a quiet place to work, if that’s their room or their dining room table.”
What is the recommended dress code to help students succeed for finals?
AP: “Being comfortable is key during testing.”
GF: “Pretty much the dress code the school has put in place, be comfortable and not distracting.”
What advice would you give to a student who is overwhelmed with finals week?
AP: “It’s too late at this point. It is a fact that stress comes with testing, but I would say just take it a little at a time.”
GF: “Just prepare and don’t get stuck on one problem.”
How much time should a student spend studying for each class final?
AP: “ I think it all depends on the class and what it demands from the student.”
GF: “Probably around four hours per class depending on if it is a advanced placement class or not.”
Who can help a student prepare for their final tests?
AP: “If you can find another student willing to study with you in that same class and quizzing each other, I feel is the most beneficial way to study.”
GF: “The best people would be either the teacher, friends or parents so that the student feels comfortable asking questions.”
