High school students struggle to find work

Minimum and lower-wage jobs usually have been open to high school students in Douglas County. However, in this economy, it is tougher for students to get these jobs.

During the last year, Douglas County has seen a 2.3 percent decrease in jobs, and these cuts directly affect teens.

“I have seen a cut in the number of games I referee since I started,” Nick Haig, sophomore said. “I like the job a lot, but the amount of games I referee could be a lot more.”

Sophomore Rosie O’Brien said she has been looking for a job for two weeks and still has not found one. Without much work experience it is understandable why she has not found one yet, but she says she wants one because “I need to learn to have a steady income.”

Students have realized that instead of choosing a favorite place to work, they have to take whatever job is available.

“I have opened my view of what kinds of jobs I will take because they have been harder and harder to find,” Sophomore Anthony Rosen said.

While new restaurants and shops have opened in the past year, many places have gone out of business as well.

“With the bad economy it makes it tough for high school students to get jobs and now they have to work even harder to get jobs in the summer,” said Dave Hildreth, Human Resources at Dillon’s, 1015 W 23rd St, said.

Teenagers are losing jobs to more skilled adult workers who have lost their jobs and now have to take lower-wage jobs to make ends meet.

“Dillon’s hires high school students regularly, but because of the bad economy we have been hiring more and more non-high school students.” Hildreth said. “With all the losses of jobs, students will find it difficult to find a job, but there are still some out there. Just look in the newspapers and online.”
