Film students bring home hardware

On Sunday, May 2, while most of the school attended mud volleyball, film students from Lawrence High participated in the fifth annual Lawrence High School Focus Film Festival Awardsat Liberty Hall. The event, organized by film and media teacher Jeff Kuhr, received 92 submissions from 14 high schools around the area.

“In many ways, the film festival has achieved what I hoped to accomplish when we first started it five years ago,” Kuhr said. “It’s become a gathering of sorts, a community of Kansas high school student filmmakers who see the festival as a chance to share their stories.”

Overall, 14 students took home awards in eight of the 14 different categories, ranging from best in show to fan favorite. The films were judged by local critics, and winners were awarded with various awards.

“The work of the LHS film students is tremendous, some in fact, quite stunning,” Kuhr said. “The bar gets higher each year, and I look forward to see next year’s films.”
