This Week at LHS: Sept. 4-10

Everything you need to know about the upcoming week at LHS

Monday, Sept. 4

School is closed for Labor Day.

JV Football takes on Olathe South at 5:30 p.m. on the road.

Tuesday, Sept. 5

Varsity girls golf competes at 1 p.m. in Wamego against several different schools.

Varsity girls tennis faces multiple schools at 1 p.m. at Olathe South. JV competes at 3 p.m.

Pride Club meets every Tuesday from 3:15-4:15 in room 328.

Chesty’s Academy Tutoring is offered 3:15-5 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in Room 212 (Ms. Henry’s Room) for anyone who needs help with homework after school.

The volleyball teams compete at home. Freshmen at JV play at 5 p.m. and C-team and varsity compete at 6 p.m.

The soccer teams compete against Seaman with JV playing at 5 p.m. and varsity playing at 6:45 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 6

JV tennis competes in a tri at Gardner Edgerton at 1:30 p.m.

Environmental Club meets 1:40-3:10 p.m. Sept. 6 in Room 197 (Ms. Ball’s Room) for a recycle box painting party. Students will paint recycle boxes for classrooms and offices around LHS. Snacks will be served. Bring your own refillable water bottle. Everyone is welcome.

The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) will have its first meeting from 1:45-2:45 p.m. in Room 341.

Unified Basketball practices from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. in the main gym. Unified Basketball is an inclusive LHS team that welcomes all students, regardless of ability level. Just show up on Wednesday to join in the fun.

Françamis: The French Club hosts its first meeting from 1:30-2:45 p.m. on Sept. 6 in the French Room, Room 353.Volleyball C-team and freshmen teams compete at home at 5 p.m. in the main gym.

Boys soccer C-team plays Shawnee Mission North at home at 6:30 p.m.

Book Club meets at 1:35 p.m. in Room 217 (Ms. Johnson’s room). Come meet everyone and help decide what books the group will read this year.

Thursday, Sept. 7

Varsity girls golf competes at 1 p.m. at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course.

Girls tennis will take part in a quad at 3 p.m. at home.

Writers Club meets at 3:15 p.m. in Room 217 (Ms. Johnson’s room). Students who enjoy creative writing can come and write with others. Members will share prompts with each other, write together, and volunteers are welcome to share their work.

The freshman football team goes up against Olathe West at Olathe West at 4:15 p.m.

Varsity and JV volleyball teams compete against multiple schools at 5 p.m. in the main gym.

Boys soccer teams face Shawnee Mission North at home with JV playing at 5:30 p.m. and varsity playing at 7 p.m.

Philosophy Club meets 3:15-4:15 p.m. in Ms. Murray’s room, Room 211, to discuss mind-boggling questions and moral dilemmas — all the while in a safe and honest environment. 

Friday, Sept. 8

The varsity football team has its home-opener at 7 p.m. against Olathe West.

Fellowship of Christian Students meets at 7 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays in Room 148. Students are invited to build caring friendships, strengthen their faith, pray for our school, and serve the community.

BEI – Brain Exercise Initiative Club meets at 3:15 to hold a quick first informational club meeting in room 154.

Saturday, Sept. 9

ACT exams for those who have signed up in advance.

The freshman volleyball team will compete in a tournament at Blue Valley High at 8 a.m.

Varsity volleyball will compete in a tournament at Lansing High School at 9 a.m.

The cross country teams will run in a meet at Jones Youth Recreation Park in Emporia at 9 a.m.

Girls tennis will compete in Emporia at 9 a.m. The JV team will be at Emporia State University’s Welch Stadium. Varsity girls will be at Emporia High School.

The gymnastics team will host a tournament at LHS starting at 10 a.m.

Sunday, Sept. 10

The Spirit Squad will host its Little Lions clinic for children from preschool through fifth grade from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gym. Children will learn motions technique, basic stunting (older children), have fun and learn a dance routine to perform at halftime of the LHS versus Shawnee Mission East game on Sept. 15. The LHS Mental Health Team has supports to help students. Members of the mental health team are available in Student Services. Lawrence High Artists are exhibiting their art (drawings, paintings, collage, photography and sculptures) at S&S Artisan Pub and Coffeehouse during the month of September. An artist reception will take place from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 23.

Activity Passes will get you in at no charge to all varsity home regular season events — tournaments and postseason excluded. The cost of an activity ticket is $25 but many students have already paid an activity ticket because of their involvement in sports or other KSHSAA activities including school music groups and debate or forensics. Activity tickets may be picked up in the finance office or watch for a table during lunch.
