Pops concert gets new direction

By Kendra Schwartz

A prerequisite to the hectic Showtime life, the 9th/10th grade Pops concert prepares underclassmen accordingly.

On May 13, the choir students performed a concert filled with both current pop music and some classic oldies. Named “Listen to the Music” the songs chronologically covered the history of music from start to present.

A few smaller ensembles and soloists were chosen to be spotlighted in the show as well. Far more limited than their junior and senior counterparts, only a couple acts were chosen.

Sophomore Emily Laughlin was chosen to perform a duet with Matthew Jacobson singing “A Whole New World.” Their modern take on a Disney classic was both fun to watch and listen to.

Some groups decided to do more classic pieces. Sophomores Leah Gabler, Mallory McFall, JooYoung Lee, and Olivia Randolph chose to sing an older classic. Sporting brightly colored dresses, their rendition of “Mr. Sandbox” added a fun element to the show.

A few other all boy or all girl groups were also chosen to perform. A crowd favorite was Connor Shuck, Jared Fangman, and Sam Thomas singing “Wagon Wheel”. This trio earned a bounty of applause for their diverse instruments as well as their impressive harmonies.

These smaller groups were combined with the larger group numbers and the individual choir numbers. Each choir class hour performed their own medley of songs complete with dance moves in each.

Although these underclassmen have yet to experience the hustle and bustle of Showtime tech week, the impressive work in the Pops show proves these underclassmen are ready for next year.
