Interview with Jamie McCall special education teacher.
Q: How did you make the cards?
A: We came up with some designs as a group and then we had different methods: we spray painted some, for some we had individual pieces for the students to put together. We wanted the best way for students to help assemble them step by step.
Q: How long did it take?
A: The idea came from Janelle Whistler and Jake (Thibodeau). We started talking about it probably early November, and we kind of took it in phases. The creative phase: What do we want them to look like? The assembly phase: putting them together. And then we sold them. It was cool because the students got to see the whole process of handling the money, selling them…
Q: What are you using the money for?
A: We’re going to use the money to fund the next project. The original idea Janelle and Jake had was to have a “cottage industry” so we can give them work skills. We made Christmas cards this time, next time we might do a public service, like planting flowers. Basically we’re using the money from this project to fund the next project.
Q: What other projects have you done?
A: This is actually the first one! We’ve done other class projects in the past, but this is the first one that is work based, trying to get them the skills to work with other people.
