John Mayer concert: review

Monday night John Mayer took to the Sprint Center for the latest stop in his Battle Studies tour. Mayer, a seven-time grammy award winner, who has recently been in the spotlight for controversial remarks, put everything aside to play an extraordinary show.

Before Mayer took the stage though it was up to the opening act Michael Franti and Spearhead to excite the crowd. Franti’s energy and crowd interaction (at times taking to the seats to perform) quickly won the crowd over and prepared them for the main act.

When Franti’s set was over and there was a brief intermission so the crew could set up the stage Mayer came out with top 100 hit “Heartbreak Warfare” much to the excitement of the crowd. Mayer went on to play hits from all of albums including covers of hits from Fleetwood Mac, Bill Withers, Paul Simons, Bob Dylan, and Journey. The majority of the concert included Mayer playing with his full band, but for a part in the middle he slowed the mood and played a strictly acoustic setlist.

After playing his hit “Why Georgia” Mayer left the stage to the loudest applause of the night. People started filing out of the arena many stayed to see if Mayer would come out for an encore. About five minutes later, he granted their request and came back out wearing a Kansas City Wizards jersey to perform two more songs.

Mayer was able to keep the crowd on their feet throughout most of the show and ultimately didn’t disappoint.
