One of the ways the district is exploring to improve security and safety is to give each student an ID badge to wear during the school day. Already, more doors are being locked to better secure the building.

A Lawrence Police Department SUV is parked outside Lawrence High School on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 12. Earlier in the day, a gun was removed from a student at school. It was the second such incident in less than a week.

Soaked — Senior John Ely will be running toward disasters this year when he begins volunteering with FEMA after graduation, acting as an emergency responder during natural disasters. He will be deployed in August to work with FEMA through AmeriCorps. “I knew I wanted to do a gap year with something that was important,” Ely said. “I wanted to feel like I was making a difference. I hope I find more self-direction and narrow down what I want to do with my life.”

blown Away — Harmonizing, senior Mark Garcia and sophomore Rose Hicks play their recorders as they participate in the ensemble Going for Baroque. The ensemble practiced and played the tune ‘Lux Aeterna.’ “I thought it would be fun and ironic to play an instrument that most people find annoying,” Hicks said. “I enjoyed the people in it because they were OK with the fact that I haven’t played since fifth grade, and they let me take time to relearn and remember how to play the recorder.”
