This year, the track team saw many group successes as well as individual ones.
Among them, Sophomore Oliver Schwartz broke the school record for the boys 2000 meter steeplechase by more than 40 seconds.
“I’d say I’m pretty good this year compared to freshman year at least,” Schwartz said. “I’ve hit all my goals.”
Coach Audrey Trowbridge believes Schwartz is making a name for himself in LHS track and looks forward to seeing what he brings to the program in the years to come.
“Schwartz is the real deal, and he’s just getting started, so it’s really fun to watch not just him, but even the cross country boys, the distance kids from my program, rally and support him.”
Many athletes believe the program has done well despite a lower-than-anticipated participation rate, including junior runner La’Keyshia Woods.
“I think we have performed well for the amount of people that are on our team,” Woods said.
Scores and results aside, athletes said they enjoyed the sport’s flexibility when it came to teamwork and individuality.
“I like this sport more than any other sport that I do,” Woods said. “I like that it’s an individual sport, but you can still place as a team. So it’s like an individual team sport and you can’t blame anyone else for your mistakes.”
Overall, Trowbridge believes the team’s community with each other has contributed to not just Schwartz’s experience, but everyones.
“He’s got a really great support system,” Trowbridge said. “And I think that is one of the reasons we’ve been able to retain so many kids.”
