‘The girl who wears pink’

As the leaves start to fall, forming a collage of brown, emerald and crimson on the streets of Lawrence; it is clear that October has begun.

However, for sophomore Caitlin Lewis, October is painted in one color: Pink. For Lewis, magenta, coral and fuchsia mark the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For her past two years at LHS Lewis has been labeled as “the girl who wears pink” by friends, peers and faculty. This is because, in support of breast cancer survivors, she dons a unique pink ensemble every day in October.

The greatest challenge for Lewis is simply finding unique pieces to wear each day of this month.

“[I try] to not run out of pink clothes, and I wear something different every day,” Lewis said.

Many people have taken note of Lewis’ unique fall style. In addition to reactions in the school building, Lewis maintains her reputation all around Lawrence.

At the Zombie Walk on Thursday, Oct. 5, Lewis recalled a fellow student approaching her, inquiring if she was “the girl who wears pink every day.”

Lewis was initially inspired to wear pink by family and consumer science teacher, Shannon Wilson, a breast cancer survivor herself.

In hearing Wilson’s story, Lewis found the motivation to make a difference by wearing the color pink to honor her teacher, survivors and the thousands of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

“I just remember I wore it the first [week] in Mrs. Wilson’s class like every day, and she was really confused,” Lewis said. “She was just really happy and smiling and was like, ‘Have you been wearing pink this whole week?’ ”

Lewis was proud to say she had. Although for now this is the only one small thing Lewis is doing to show her support, she strives to get the word out about breast cancer.

“It’s actually a really big deal,” Lewis said. “Sure it’s [primarily] just for women, but it affects a lot of people and a lot of families.”
