This election season, the Young Democrats club has gotten involved in various events and activities around Lawrence to promote their candidates and the importance of voting.
“We have watched debates together… being able to watch helped us be informed on the policy that both candidates are trying to present,” Young Democrats club member and senior Adelaide Sivits said.
Junior Shea Spiess is grateful to the Young Democrats club for another outlet for political education.
“It’s just another way to educate ourselves, that’s not generally found in classrooms since politics are generally kept out of the classroom, especially modern politics,” club member and junior Shea Spiess said.
This year, club members went canvassing, a systematic initiation where they have direct contact and conversations with people.
“We went door to door, and, we’re knocking and we’re like, make sure you’re registered to vote, and then [we] give our opinions on why Kamala is a preferable candidate,” Sivits said.
Young Democrats’ primary message is to encourage voting.
“We’re just trying to spread awareness, making sure everybody who’s 18 and is already registered goes out and votes,” club co-president and senior Trent Blettner said. “And the importance of making your voice heard in this election.”
Blettner also had a message for high schoolers not eligible to vote.
“If you can’t vote yet, just make sure to stay informed, when you’re able to,” Blettner said. ”Especially not just focusing on national elections and what’s going on in the nation, but also make sure to stay informed about your local candidates”
Sivits agreed.
“Just 5 minutes a day can make a big difference, and it can really contribute to people being better informed,” Sivits said. ”As high schoolers, it’s really important because we are gonna be the next voting base, so we need to be the most informed that we can be.”
