Over the past two years, attendance at Lawrence High dances has been shrinking. Due to the lack of interest, the number of LHS dances has been cut down. Student Council is correct in their thinking that there should be fewer dances at LHS.
Not only has the recent Winter Court dance been canceled, but the only dances LHS will hold are the Lion’s Leap, Winter Formal and Prom. Since the number of students attending dances has been diminishing, there is no point in having dances. At Lion’s Leap and Winter Formal, an “average” number of students showed up, most likely because Lion’s Leap was the first dance of the year and Winter Formal because it was a formal dance. There were some at the Homecoming dance, but still not a lot. Finally, at the Halloween dance, barely any students showed up, and StuCo actually lost money.
Another reason to not hold dances is the time factor.
Dances typically last for about three hours, and that is taking three hours out of security guards time and Student Council member’s time. Not to mention, Student Council also has to spend time setting up the dances. This time could be used on other service projects.
There are some cons to not holding dances.
For those few students who attend, dances present a fun time to hang out with friends. If nothing is going on the night of dances, students can slap down $5 and dance the night away.
However, whether students like it or not, there will not be as many dances at LHS as there have been previously. If students would show up to dances, they could possibly save them. Students still will have the opportunity to participate in three dances, though: Lion’s Leap, Winter Formal and Prom. Although a few may miss an experience, life at Lawrence High School will go on.
