The 2016-17 debate season has started off strong. There have been a total of 13 tournaments so far, and out of those tournaments, there have been seven where LHS students have placed 3rd place or higher.

Debate teacher Jeff Plinsky has high hopes for the rest of the season.

We’ve had a really good season so far, particularly our young debaters,” Plinsky said. “Our first year kids are really stepping up and that’s been fun to watch.”

In the most recent tournament, sophomore Vera Petrovic and senior Abbie Treff placed 2nd in the Open Division with a 5-0 record. Treff has been a member of the debate team for four years at Lawrence High, and is excited to compete this year.

My best memory [is] probably be going second place at my most recent tournament, just because it was kind of my first real success of the season,” Treff said. “It was good.”
