Pop Show concert rocks out

Concert for underclassmen showcases young talents in popular numbers

On Monday, May 16 concert choir, women’s choir and men’s choir joined together to create the Pop Show, a performance that was not only memorable for those who saw it, but also for those who participated.

Preparation for Pop Show was strenuous but without a doubt worth it, said Randall Frye, who co-directed the Pop Show with choir teacher Dwayne Dunn.

“We start looking at music usually in about October or November, just seeing what’s out there with the publishers and seeing what is going to work,” Frye said. “Because not all pop music is put into choral arrangements and so we look for that.”

The Pop Show is a production that allows underclassmen to take a step out of their comfort zone. A lot of students love the Pop Show because it gives them the confidence to sing things rather than the classical music they’re adapted to.

“By doing music that is not just classical, it helps us become more well rounded singers so when we’re older we can perform so many types of music,” freshman Katie Ahern said, who had two featured acts in the Pop Show.

Students have also stated that they have benefited and improved from not only practicing, but from working and becoming closer with Frye as well.

“It’s fun,” freshman Tiffani Smith, who did a duet with freshman Izzy Hedges, stated. “He [Frye] is a really funny guy. You’re always comfortable around him and you never have to be shy.”

Overall, the Pop Show is a preface to Showtime and it allows underclassmen to develop and prepare themselves for what lies ahead.

“It was a fantastic experience and I’ve heard heard faculty, students, and parents very happy about the performance. Dr. Dunn and I were really pleased,” Frye said.
