Senior week is notorious for one thing and one thing only: The pranks.
Every year a group of seniors rises from the rest to come up with the most clever and original pranks in the history of Lawrence High. But sometimes, the master minds of the senior population go a little too far.
“The biggest issue that we’ve had in the past would be some instances of what might be considered hazing,” assistant principal Mike Norris said.
Previous years have seen upperclassmen “abducting” underclassmen in the school parking lot and shaving their heads. Other pranks have seen seniors get a key to the school “breaking in.” Officially, seniors are not restricted from all pranks, but “it’s kind of a controlled senior prank,” Norris said.
Administration prefers that the group of seniors who want to do a prank run the idea by administrators first.
“Whoever rises to the top and figures out what the prank is comes to administration and says, ‘Hey these are the five ideas we want to do,’ and we’re like, ‘This one’s OK or this one’s OK,’ ” Norris said.
Once the group gets permission from an administrator, a custodian or someone from administration stays late enough after school to let the group into the school. That way, administration can keep an eye on them while they are putting their prank into action.
If someone breaks the rules of senior week, they deal with the consequences.
“We try to make it clear what the rules are and, like any other rules, there are consequences,” Norris said.
It remains to be seen where seniors believe the line should be drawn.
“Death is probably the line,” said senior Dominic Cole. “No one should die. Death or serious injury.”
