On April 2nd a $92.5 million public school bond issue was approved by Kansas voters; “According to the Douglas County Clerk’s Office, the unofficial, final vote count after Tuesday’s election was: 8,013 YES and 3,082 NO,” as stated on the district’s website.
How will this affect Lawrence High School? The school board hopes to expand the cafeteria along with adding on a new blackbox theatre and more storage space for the music department. I asked Pam Alt, the Cafeteria Manager, and Orchestra teacher Rachel Dirks, how they felt about the bond and how it would impact LHS specifically.
Alt: “For right now I’m not sure what it will do to the cafeteria, I haven’t been let in on those plans. I have heard that they’re going to go to the back of the building and put on more warehouse usage back there. It’s great.”
Dirks: “The plans are still being talked about and what is the best option for our department up here. Our hope is that they will build a new blackbox theatre. What is currently our blackbox is much smaller than Free State’s so we want to have an equitable space between the two buildings. That space would then become instrument storage for the band as well as another classroom rehearsal space, which we desperately need -and use. And then what is currently the brass storage area will become more string storage area, allowing us to get instruments off the stage, and it makes more sense for kids to be able to unpack in their room and things like that. So we’re very excited.”
