Principal Matt Brungardt received a call at 3 a.m. this morning informing him that a man attempted to break into the Lawrence High School annex.
“My understanding is some time about 3 o’clock in the morning, some gentleman came up, grabbed the lid off the trash can and tried to gain entry into the annex by breaking in a window,” Brungardt said.
A neighbor to the school heard loud noises and contacted police.
The man did not succeed in breaking into the school. Police later arrested 43-year-old Lawrencian Kelly Christopher Powell in connection with the break in. Powell was arrested at the scene and taken to Douglas County Jail.
This is not an entirely rare occurrence for LHS, as Brungardt said, “It seems like something like this happens about once a year, typically it’s students.”
As for the broken annex door, the school is contacting Kennedy Glass in hope of getting the door repaired as soon as possible.
