On Tuesday, Jan. 12, a 7.0 scale earthquake struck Haiti. The following day, aftershocks hit the third world country. Though many nations are helping out, the country is still in need of aid. Sophomore Student Council has devised a plan to help contribute. By donating money and supplies, LHS students hope to raise awareness and aid for Haiti.
The sophomore Student Council proposed a petition with the purpose of donating a portion of the sophomore Student Council’s money to the Red Cross. If the petition gained 51 percent of the sophomore student body’s approval, the money would be donated, and on Jan. 28, it did.
Students and staff can also donate money to the Student Council window at lunch, and the money will be donated to the Red Cross as well.
“Whether it’s a lot or a little bit, everything counts,” sophomore class representative Troy Willoughby said.
Students can donate items for “care packages” as well.
Care packages are packs of daily luxuries, such as deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and soap. Students can also donate separate items or make their own packs. These care packages will go to local Heart to Heart Care Package drop sites.
Through the help of the sophomore Student Council and the student body, Haiti will be recognized and helped. The sophomore Student Council hopes that raising money will raise awareness about the catastrophic event.
“At first, it didn’t register for people because it didn’t necessarily affect them,” sophomore Student Council president J’Qui Audena said. “As a team, we realized it was catastrophic, so we thought, ‘What could we do to help?'”
