KCTV 5 has chosen Lawrence High School as one of their viewing area’s “Cool Schools.” From 5-8 AM Friday, Sept. 25, Channel 5 will have a crew in the main gym interviewing and filming Lawrence High students and staff.
Librarian Martha Oldham nominated LHS for the award. In the nomination she mentioned National Merit Scholars and the success of Charlie Lauts’ engineering students at the Global Construction Challenge in Tennessee in spring of last year.
Cheer coach Gwen Wedd is organizing the Cool School assembly and has gathered a plethora of LHS talent to perform.
“Lawrence High School is a great school,” cheer coach Gwen Wedd said. “All of the programs from Fine Arts to Athletics are awesome. There are very talented students walking the halls of LHS. All activities and athletics are very supportive of each other.”
At 5:10 AM the gymnasium will already be ringing with music. The band and A Cappella choir will perform the National Anthem, alma mater and fight song. Then the band will perform their marching show, followed by performances by A Cappella and orchestra.
Additionally, Counselor Robert Shandy will be doing a magic act, the Native American Club will be dancing, and the drama students will perform scenes from their current production, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).”
Also, StuCo members will be sharing what they love about Lawrence High, and the cheer and pom squads will perform routines.
Varsity volleyball and varsity football may also play a competitive game of volleyball.
Contrary to rumors at the Fall Sports Assembly, the schedule on Sept. 25 will not be changed, according to Principal Matt Brungardt. Students participating in the assembly as a part of a school-sponsored activity, however, will be excused from their zero hour classes; however, no students will be released early from school.
Brungardt thinks students will trickle in as the assembly goes on. He is not speaking at the assembly but will be in attendance.
“I think LHS is a cool school because the diversity of the faculty and student body,” Principal Matt Brungardt said. “The accomplishments of our students and teachers are what differs us from our peers.”
