The Lawrencian: Jazzercise

By Genevieve Voigt

Woohoo! Upbeat music and lots of jumping! I’ve never done any sort of exercise class before, but it was super fun. I completely sucked, because it was my first time, but it was funny and enjoyable.

Everyone else there is totally in the same boat as you. They mess up, laugh, and keep going. Nobody pays attention to anyone else, so it’s not embarrassing to be squatting to Britney Spears.

Classes run every day of the week at varying times, so you can find a class that works for you. I went on a Sunday evening, so there weren’t many other people — but that was definitely okay. Less people to watch me attempt to follow the instructor. With less people, the teacher was able to focus a little more on how each person was doing and throw out some advice here and there.

The tempo is quick, and the moves change rapidly. It’s hard to keep up, but it doesn’t really matter. You’re moving the whole time.

In fact, it kind of helps to have it be changing all the time. You’re so focused on doing the right thing that you don’t notice the time going by. The classes are an hour each, but it really doesn’t feel like it. I looked up part way through, expecting about 15 minutes to have passed, but we were already half done.

I followed along as well as I could and actually got pretty tired. The instructor really works up to the middle, but then it just gets easier and easier. By the end, you want to keep going.

Plus, I got an excuse to wear athletic clothes. Anyone who knows me knows that I practically live in sportswear. I try to actually look presentable at school, but at home it’s all running shorts, sweats, and sweatshirts. Finally I have a reason to wear my cute and comfortable clothes.

If you have the time, try an exercise class. Jazzercise was a lot more fun than I was expecting. I’m a little tired, but it’s not very bad. I’d definitely go back!
