The Lions freshman boys basketball team got off to a strong start with three straight straight wins against Saint Thomas Aquinas, Blue Valley Northwest and Free State.

Freshman Truman Juelsgaard said he feels confident about the season so far.

“It started off good,” Juelsgaard said. “We have really good coaching and a really good team.”

Juelsgaard said players are a tight group beyond the court and are focused on doing well in their classes.

“Student athlete is our motto,” he said.

While it is still early in the season, it’s common for players who haven’t competed together to have trouble at the beginning of the year. This is not the case for The Lions. Freshman Pearse Long said they have awesome communication on and off the court.

“I like the communication on the team,” he said. “There’s nobody that gets mad at you and the coaches are chill.”

Long said he looks up to the varsity team a lot. The varsity team has made four straight appearances at the state tournament.

“Before practice they’re always in the gym there doing their practice and I try to take notes,” Long said.

It’s not just the players who feel good about the season so far. Coach Jacob Larson is feeling confident in this group of players and sees lots of potential.

“I like the players on the team and how they work together,” Larson said.
