A wrestler’s guide to making weight

  • Practicing nutrition properly can make losing weight both rapid and healthy for the wrestlers.
  • Cutting weight excessively can destroy muscle and lead to long-term health problems.
  • Most wrestlers cannot eat carbs and are restricted to meat, fruit, fish, and vegetables.
  • Wrestlers who fail to make their weight class have to run the weight off, or move up a weight class. If the weight is not cut wrestlers could also risk being disqualified from the match.
  • According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, three wrestlers died in 1998 while trying to lose weight rapidly.
  • Rapid weight loss can cause sleepiness, mood swings and a slow rate of growth.
  • Lack of food causes low energy and less of a chance to peak during performance.
