Lions win dual versus No. 7 team

Thursday night, No.10 Lawrence High Lions took on the No. 7 Mustangs of Blue Valley North.

The Mustangs took the early lead as Lawrence was open at the 103 lbs. class. Then the Lions roared off three straight pins by freshmen Hunter Haralson and Marshall Bonham, and junior Caleb Torneden, giving the Lions a 12 point lead.

The Mustangs scored an easy victory at the 130 lbs. class as Lawrence forfeited.

At 135lbs. Lawrence High’s senior Chris Lane took just over one minute to pin Matt Bayer of Blue Valley North.  Zach  Tanenbaum State Champion from Blue valley North defeated junior Levi Flohrschutz by a technical fall 16-1, giving the Mustangs five points.

Lawrence High lead Blue Valley 24 to 17 coming into the 145lbs. class. Senior Braxton Vardys scored a technical fall over Grant Simmons, pushing the Lions lead to 29-17 over the Mustangs.

In the 152 lbs. class freshman Spencer Wilson scored a major victory over Patrick Whisler. The victory boosted the Lions lead to 33-17.

Sophomore Reece Wright-Conklin, returning State placer for the Lions, scored a walk off victory as Blue Valley chose to forfeit.

The match of the night was at 171 lbs. class – a rematch from the State tournament one year ago, pitting the Lions senior Dustin Walthall against the Mustang’s Jared Hoopes. Hoopes defeated Wathall last week at The Leavenworth Challenger, this week would be another story. In a classic battle, Walthall scored an escape and takedown to beat Hoopes 8-6.

Junior Ben Seybert (189lbs.) pinned Ryan Rooney to run the score to 48-17 over the Mustangs.

The Mustangs won the next two weight classes. At 215lbs. class the Mustang’s Tully Kaiminau scored a forfeit from LHS and at 285 lbs. class Louis Gonzales pinned the Lion sophomore Brad Wilson.

In the end it was not enough as the Lions roared to a 48-29 victory over the Blue Valley North Mustangs.

Up next for the Lions is the Eudora Tournament, which starts Friday, Dec.11, and runs through Saturday.
