Spring Play takes new ‘risks’

This year’s spring play, “Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play,” took place in the blackbox theater on April 7, 8 and 9.

The production wasn’t like anything Lawrence High has seen before — with the abstract theme challenging to understand for cast and audience members alike.“This year’s cast has been working really hard and doing great with the tricky script since they’re not used to its theme,” theater teacher Jaime Johnson said.

The story’s plot follows a group of people who live in a post-apocalyptic world and try to recall their memories through the TV show “The Simpsons.” It starts by portraying the survivors right after tragedy strikes, then seven years after the incident, then 75 years later. Although the play was less conventional than others the school has done in the past, it was a risk Johnson was willing to take.

“I think this play will be something that is different,” Johnson said. “You either love it or hate it, there’s no in-between. For the director it’s all about taking risks.”
